around Atlanta…

Historic Roswell, Georgia

There is a charming historic district in Roswell, Georgia, just North of Atlanta that I am excited to tell you about.  It is an area with a rich civil war history that has evolved into a weekend destination and lively nightspot with wonderfully diverse restaurants and interesting shops.  Roswell surprises with vivid textures, quirky signs and eye-catching patterns, providing an appealing and colorful welcome to town.  It’s an easy place to navigate, just park in the free lot in front of  Canton Street Antique Market, adjust your walking shoes and explore!

Yearning for the old world feel of a Parisian market?   You will adore Roswell Provisions.  A visual treat, this new store is part gift shop, part café, part delicatessen, part wine shop, and part farmers market.  The friendly clerks make you feel at home to comfortably  wander around and look at the merchandise or gaze at the creative interior design.   The deli carries exotic cheeses from around the globe, as well as the popular Patak meat products from Europe.  My favorites, of course, are the flakey pastries and the very pretty, amazingly delicious cupcakes.

Just across the street is the popular Salt Factory, a  restaurant “worth its salt,”  has the wonderful ambiance of a local English Pub, a great  menu, delicious food and attentive staff.  A Zagat’s reviewer said, “Funky interior – industrial and Victorian touches mix – and high-end pub food makes this worth the wait. Even Brits approve of the fish & chips and the shepherds pie is good you’ll want to call your Mum.”  Zagat’s reviewer.

This vibrant door is attached to one of the oldest buildings in the area, a former potato barn that has been home to “Go With the Flow,” a popular outdoor paddlesport specialist, (i.e. kayaks, canoes) for the past twenty years.  GWTF is owned by brothers David and Barrett Schubert known for their product knowledge and great customer service, and are carefully supervised by their two friendly black labs, Bram and Avery.  And yes!  Reefs are ridiculously comfortable – I own at least four pairs.

Our last stop for this story is on a side street named Green.  These two glass doors, the accidental reflection of myself included, belong to Greenwoods on Green Restaurant.   Walking through them is like hopping off a time machine into the fun and funky 60s!  Greenwoods’ homemade food is made fresh daily using locally-grown, organic produce. The menu is unique, the food fabulous!

Historic Roswell, Georgia is located approximately 20 miles north of Atlanta.  This story includes a mere sampling of the restaurants, shops and  overall charms of the city.  If you live in the Atlanta area, or will be in town for a visit, it is well worth the drive.  I can almost guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised!
